British Values
The DfE have recently reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.
At Kaye’s Academy, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
Democracy
Democracy is an integral part of our school community. Every year the children have the opportunity to apply for positions within school such as classroom monitors, play leaders, School Council, Eco Council. The elections of School Councillors are a democratic process with candidates submitting their reasons why they would be suitable for the role, giving speeches with all children having an equal vote. The School Council and Eco Council meet regularly to discuss issues raised in class and co-ordinate events in school which impact positively on the whole school community and beyond.
Children can share their opinions through pupil surveys. Pupil voice is used in school policies and curriculum planning.
Rule of Law
The importance of laws, whether it is those that govern the class or school rules or the country’s laws, are positively reinforced throughout the school day. Rules and laws are discussed in assemblies, lessons and circle time. Children are taught the value and the reasons why we have laws. Children at Kaye’s know we have laws to keep us safe. They know that there are consequences if rules are broken. This message is reinforced by visitors in school such as the Police and Fire Service. Children are involved in deciding and reviewing school rules and consequences.
Individual Liberty
At Kaye’s Academy, children are actively encouraged to make choices within safe boundaries. Children are taught that school is a safe and supportive environment where they learn about, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely. In lessons, children may choose extra challenges or how to record their work. Kaye’s wide range of extra-curricular clubs and opportunities provide children with the freedom of choice.
Mutual Respect
Respect is one of our three core values and is woven into all aspects of school life. Children are reminded of what respect means and how it is shown. Assemblies promote respect and recognition of children being respectful is celebrated. Children learn to have respect for others, for their belongings and school equipment and the environment in which we live. Children actively encourage each other to be respectful and follow our class and school rules.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Children are taught about the culturally diverse society in which we live. We promote diversity in our curriculum through carefully chosen stories, resources, and experiences where differences are celebrated. Learning in RE, PSHE, visits and visitors teach children to value all faiths and beliefs. Kaye’s Academy welcomes children and families from any faith, belief, or no religion. Children learn that there are many different faiths and to show respect towards people who have different faiths and beliefs to their own and that it is ok not to be a believer.
